Think You’re Smart? No, It’s DUMB!

Those who think they are smart are in fact dumb. Not a personal opinion, it’s science!

Stop for a moment and try to recall the people you know who think they are smart and got it all figured out. Remember those big bright eyes that speak as if they own the world; they think they know it all, when in reality they don’t have a clue.

It’s not their fault they think they are smart; simply because they don’t know that they are dumb. They actually suffer from the Dunning–Kruger effect, whereby an unskilled person will make poor decisions and conclusions based on the little knowledge he/she possesses and this incompetency denies him/her the ability to actually realize his/her misconceptions, mistakes and stupidity!

What makes it worse is that the small surrounding community of such people containing of friends and family actually nurtures them as they are the smartest people on Earth and the most skilled of all. This actually can explain the poor and unfortunate songs, movies, series, actors, singers, art or research that we get stumped by nowadays.

Not only would those people not recognize their own stupidity, but they wouldn’t recognize the capability of other people making them unable to compare themselves to them. So, they don’t get a glimpse of an idea that they need improvement! They also don’t realize that they are facing competition!

Obviously since those dumb people don’t realize they are stupid, they can’t actually realize the extreme of their stupidity. Yet, it’s not all bad news for dumb people, because when the time comes when they can recognize and acknowledge their incompetence, they can be improved by being trained. The question here lies, are they going to realize they are unskilled or are they going to keep on obsessing they are the most skilled of all?

On the other hand, if you are smart, you like to feel stupid; you keep on searching everyday discovering you know almost nothing until you reach a point where you are indeed an expert but still underestimate your abilities, so you think you are stupid! See the paradox!

I am not bluffing here; it’s really science! The Dunning–Kruger effect was brought forward by Justin Kruger and David Dunning in their scientific research report “Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments” where they were awarded the Ig Nobel Prizes in Psychology in 2000.

“People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it. Across 4 studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability.”

You don’t even know what you don’t know.

Of course everyone has to right to think he/she is smart. Everyone is smart in his own way. However, some people HIGHLY UNDERESTIMATE the intelligence of other people and OVERESTIMATE their capabilities thinking that other people are fools and they are the smartest people on Earth. I am sure Einstein and Ahmed Zewil don't think they are the smartest people on Earth simply because if they did or if Ahmed Zewil thought he got nothing more to learn, he would be sitting at home now watching TV not doing research...

In this study, Experts are more likely to accurately judge their status than dumb people. It's like when someone has really bad English skills thinks that "I speak London very best" is actually a correct sentence!

I couldn't agree more 3ala "el-fateen"
