The Best Is Yet to Come

The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.”  -Marcel Pagnol

Remember when we were kids and wanted to grow up? (What were we thinking, right?) We were amused by what adults can do. They were entitled to do whatever they want. We were so jealous and wanted to grow older as soon as now. I bet that was one of the reasons we drank milk, so we can grow up to be just like them. Only if we knew!

It is not only that though. When we leave high school to go to college, we feel that the best times were when we were in school; when we leave college for work, we say college was the best; and when we are in a relationship, we say single life rules. So, when exactly do we feel that now and tomorrow are the best times we can have? After all, those are the only times we can actually change or control.

Some of today’s shortcomings blind sight us for what is great at the happening now or what else is expected to be rewarding tomorrow. A tougher road today leaves us nostalgic to yesterday’s cranky design. We forgot yesterday’s shortcomings because our memories like to fade away the bad experiences and rather keep the positive ones alive in our recollections.

A concept in psychology called "Rosy Retrospection" refers to this kind of thing, whereby we actually see past events way better than when we previously experienced them. We may even see “normal” things in the past as deliberately awesome today. This happens when disappointments and disruptions occur after this “normal” event, whereby we will see the “okay” past as one of those best nonrenewable moments.

The mind can trick us and play some nasty games from time to time. Perhaps the past wasn’t that great and the best is really yet to come!
